Beam angles may not be the first thing to come to mind when figuring out which LED light best suits a space, but it can make a big difference. Aside from the wattage, voltage and colour temperature, the beam angle should also be considered for several reasons. What Is a Beam Angle?

The beam angle is the angle in which the light is distributed from the initial source. The smaller the angle, the narrower the beam, and the bigger the angle the wider the beam.

You Can Adjust the Beam Angle?

You read that correctly, you can! Our AA-900068UCCTW UFO High Bay fixture has a patented adjustable beam angle. With three different angles at 60-degrees, 90-degrees, and 120-degrees, the UFO High Bay just became even more customizable. Prior to this new addition, our UFO High Bays had adjustable wattage and colour temperature. Now with the added feature of adjustable angles, it has become even easier to select the right LED fixture for your space.

 

If you are lighting a warehouse for example, you could have the same UFO fixture, but with different beam angles in the same area. You can have a 60-degree beam for task areas such as worktables and a 120-degree beam angle to light general areas. This means you do not have to install different fixtures to achieve different beam angles in the same area, you just need the one! This is a simple summary for each angle:

60-degrees: A narrow beam focused on smaller areas

90-degrees: A balanced option between narrow and wide coverage

120-degrees: A wide beam angle best for lower ceilings and covering larger areas

Why Does the Beam Angle Matter?

The beam angle is important because you want to properly spread out your lighting coverage in an area. You want to focus on energy efficiency as well as visibility. It is important to note as well that there are many other factors that come into play when deciding the best beam angle. These include mounting height, the size of the space, lighting purpose/focus, lumen output, and wattage. Here is a breakdown of how these factors play a role in the beam angle:

1. Height

The higher the ceiling, the narrower you want the beam to be to focus on specific areas. Narrower beams help direct light downward to certain areas without losing intensity. Alternatively, wide angle beams are more suitable for lower ceilings as they lighten up a broader area.

2. Size

In larger areas, using a wider beam angle can help reduce the number of fixtures needed to illuminate. This also helps with energy efficiency. Having more area coverage from one fixture is more realistic than needing multiple. For smaller sized locations, having a lower angle beam allows for focus on that specific area.

3. Lighting Focus

It is crucial to ask yourself what you want to focus on enhancing with your lighting. Narrower beams are ideal for task areas. For example, in a kitchen, narrower beams would be over the kitchen counter where you would cook. Wider beams are ideal for living spaces where the beam can reach further for a more ambient atmosphere.
