While many picture that the design of an office has stayed unanimous since the second industrial revolution, this cannot be more untrue. Although subtle, changes are made subsequently and introduced over the years for the enhancement of safety, health, and sustainability.
The biggest example would be homes and offices built before 1978. Most interior walls were painted with lead-based wall paints and being exposed to them long-term causes damage to the nervous system, liver, or to the kidneys. While short-term exposure of inhaling lead paint can cause headache, dizziness, light-headedness, nausea or even trouble breathing. With changes in the chemicals producing paint, it can affect more than aesthetic appeal but detrimental to our health. Although these advancement cannot be seen with the naked eye, they’re detrimental for our health and safety.
We have come a long way for our own safety, health, and sustainability. One of the most overlooked changes are our choices of light fixtures and technology behind it. The mainstream option before the recent years were fluorescent light bulbs which is still found in many buildings world wide contains mercury and phosphorus inside which is hazardous and contaminates the surrounding environment. The innovation from fluorescent bulbs and solution are the later invented Light-emitting diodes, recently mass produced and implemented in modern municipalities worldwide as a cost-saving and sustainable lighting.
